** DISCLAIMER ** This information is based anecdotal evidence.
Actually I think the formula works like this:
Primary Profession --> stuff that drops will have a 1% chance of being for that profession.
Secondary Profession --> stuff that drops will have a 10% chance of being for that profession. It will usually have a req of 13.
You must be a Monk/Mesmer/Necro/Warrior primary with a secondary that isn't Ranger/Elementalist when you get your drops.

It depends on what you're killing. Are you farming a specific type of monster?

Not really farming much at all (I've only gotten as far as the desert). Playing my level 20 N/Me I occasionally "farm" mergoyles and brood skales in North Kryta (just outside Gates of Kryta) generally to test out new spells and builds. I know that sounds kinda lame, but it's about the hardest area I can safely solo at this point. The last two times I did that I got one gold item each time thru before my inventory filled up and they were both bows. But this seems to happen all over.

A monster of a certain profession is much more likely to drop an item that profession can use, so perhaps it's because of all the mergoyles you're killing. I've only seen one bow drop for me in a week of playing.

its ANet's way of laughing at all the rangers, tempting them with 1 thing and using the other as a clue. the clues are the bows, which resemble rangers and the earth...well ANets laughing at rangers for not having an earth resistant armor set....thats it...

Hmmm, if this were true I would think I'd be getting all kinds of Necro/Mesmer gear from the Mergoyles (definitely Mesmers, lots of Spirit Shackles) and Bog Skale (Necros for sure with Putrid Exp, Demonic Flesh and Life Siphon). But it doesn't seem that I am, at least as far as the better (purple, gold) drops go. I'll have to watch what kind of lower level stuff they drop more carefully.

Some monsters seem like they mainly stick within their class for drops (Blessed Griffons come to mind, seems like they always drop monk stuff), while others can drop all sorts of funky crap.
It does seem like you barely ever get good drops for the primary profession you're playing, though. I've gotten a grand total of one decent monk weapon while playing my monk for some 700 hours, but I've gotten good elementalist, mesmer, and warrior equipment. The only decent bow I've gotten on my ranger was from a chest, but I've found a few other good ones as drops on my elementalist and the warrior I used to have. And the list goes on.
Of course, I mainly just use modded collector staves on my casters anyway, so I don't care too much.
